National Science Day, 2019
We drew inspiration from Arvind Gupta and created science toys out of trash. Magnetic levitation toy, a handmade CD spectroscope (that showed the spectrum of light), Foucault pendulum and several simple experiments with magnets for school students!
We invited around 80 students from four nearby schools – Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society School (Gowlidoddi), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (Ranga Reddy District), Kendriya Vidyalaya (UoH Campus), Zilla Parishad High School (Serilingampally) for this event. There was a group activity for the students to visualize the order of DNA packaging in living cells. They had to compress a 2 metre wire (analogous to a DNA strand) into compact chromatin.

Prof. N. D Hari Dass delivered a popular science talk on the Young’s double slit experiment. He, along with a few TIFRH students, demonstrated how to do this experiment in a spirit closest to that of Young’s 1801 experiment.
Basil Thurakkal (graduate student, TIFR Hyderabad) made a short video of the celebrations.
This programme was successful due to the enthusiatic participation of both the invited school students as well the graduate students from the institute.
